Weekly Update 14 May 2021

  1. Claire Wilson

Claire died in the Edington on Saturday 8 May aged 95. She was a bright, energetic, independent woman. I remember her still serving soup at the Beacon with her usual smile when she was in her nineties.  Her warmth, kindness and generosity meant she had a wide circle of friends. She was a feisty character and wasn’t afraid to express her opinions. She’d been telling God it was time he took her, and her prayer was granted.

  1. Christian Aid Events

Photography Competition

Throughout May, we are holding a “Life after Lockdown” Photography Competition to raise funds for Christian Aid. There are two age categories: adults, and children under 16. Photos should relate to either or both of the topics of: 1. Scenery; 2. Wildlife/Animals (including pets). For terms and conditions, please see the poster in the High Street vestibule, or visit: https://www.facebook.com/christianaidnorthberwick

Christian Aid Quizzes

There are two quizzes this month! Our own Christian Aid Quiz has the theme of Mountains. The Official Christian Aid Quiz is about Song Titles (and we’ve made it easier by putting the answers in alphabetical order). Find “Christian Aid Quizzes” under “Groups & Activities” on the church website.

Dirleton Market on the Green

On Sunday 23 May, there will be a Christian Aid stall at Dirleton Market on the Green, which takes place from 11am to 3pm. There are lots of Raffle Prizes to be won, plus the two Quizzes for sale. Local author David Alton will be selling signed copies of his books Polar Stroke and Stroke of Fortune.

  1. Church Weekend Away

Before Easter I asked you to help us work out whether a Church Weekend Away at Loch Insh in June 2022 was viable.  Your response was really helpful. From it we were able to work out that there IS an appetite and a desire for this, but that what we want to do and what Loch Insh offers does NOT match.  So we will not going to Loch Insh.

Instead we have booked Scripture Union’s site at Scoughall (just past Tantallon) for Saturday 11 June 2022.  At this stage, please block that date off in your diary.  Going local gives us greater flexibility and will allow us to include many more people. Details to follow in due course.

  1. After Church Zoom

The space after worship on Sundays at 11.30 am has been a wonderful way of getting to know each other and talking about our faith. I expected it to run for five weeks and it’s now been going for five months.  The number of people participating has declined which makes sense since there are many more opportunities now to meet others in person.

The Zoom space will continue on Sundays at 11.30 am  but with a different format.  From this coming Sunday they will not be ‘hosted’, questions will not be circulated and there won’t be breakout rooms. The space will be there for anyone who turns up using the usual login. It is the responsibility of everyone who is on the Zoom call to look out for all the others on it,  to ensure that they don’t dominate, and quieter people are encouraged to contribute.

The login this week, and in coming weeks is

  1. Sunday Worship

We continue with two services in the church building at 9 am and 10.30 am.  The rules have changed which means that we are no longer restricted to 50 people. The total number we can have depends on whether people come singly, in pairs or in family groups – which makes organising it harder, but does mean we can take a few more people. Last Sunday there were spaces at both services.

Please book before turning up.  You can book right up to the time the service starts – you can even do it on your phone in the car park!  Booking ahead guarantees you a place – but if you forget to book or decide on Sunday morning the you’d like to come, log on to Eventbrite and see if there is a place available. And if there is, book and come.

  1. Thy Kingdom Come

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray for more people to come to know Jesus. What started in 2016 as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to the Church of England has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

Thy Kingdom Come runs from Ascension day (yesterday) till Pentecost (a week on Sunday).  To find our more go to

  1. Douglas Hamilton

I’m delighted that Douglas Hamilton is taking the services on Sunday 23 May. (I am on holiday from 17-23 May). By then Douglas will have completed his course at New College. We will be saying farewell to him on Sunday 30 May. On June 1 he goes to begin in probationary period. He’s not going far. He will begin his probation at Traprain and I will have the pleasure of being his supervisor.

  1. Weekly Prayer

This continues each Wednesday at 7 pm on Zoom for 30 minutes. The login is the same each week
