Weekly Update 29 March 2024

Lift now fixed!

  1. Good Friday 29 March

Today is one of the most solemn days of the years. There is an opportunity to pause and appreciate its significance tonight in Abbey Church at 7.30 pm.

2)   Easter Day 31 March

Clocks change during the night and you lose an hour.

Come at either 9.30 or 10.30 am to share in the wonderful news that Christ is risen from the dead. Why not invite family, friends and neighbours to come with you? This Sunday it will be the 9.30 service which will be live-streamed.

3)   Monday 1 April

The Church office will be closed on Monday and open as usual during the rest of the week.

4)   Reducing CO2 emissions

Have you noticed the sign on the Church Office door? This shows that EVERY month this winter the church building has created 3.5 TONNES of CO2. Almost all of that comes from heating. Since caring for creation is part of God’s mission the Kirk Session has been developing a plan to reduce this.

Consultants have identified the church hall as the way the biggest difference can be made. The Kirk Session have approved a plan to;

– add insulation to the hall ceiling

– install underfloor heating

– install a heat pump for the underfloor heating

– install solar panels and a battery to help run the heat pump.

Whether or not this work is done the hall floor needs to be replaced because the wood is beginning to break up, so it makes sense to fit underfloor heating at the same time.

This is an ambitious plan which will reduce the CO2 produced by the church building by about 1/3 and is likely to cost £130,000

The next stage is to apply for funding and permission from various bodies. This will take some months and I will keep you informed as matters unfold. In the meantime please pray for wisdom and perseverance for those who are taking the plan forward.

5)   Gilbert and Sullivan Evening

St Andrew Blackadder Guild is hosting an evening with the Edinburgh G & S Society in aid of Guild projects on Friday 12th April at 7.30pm in St Andrew Blackadder Church.  Tickets costing £10 (children free) will be on sale from Guild committee (see Ann Braid) and from Greens and Blues or at the door on the night.

6)   Prayer Gatherings

Every Sunday in Prayer Room between 10 and 10.20 am

Every Monday in Room 1 between 10 and 11 am.

Every Wednesday on Zoom between for 30 minutes starting at 7 pm.
