2. Derek Brown
Derek died after a short illness on Wednesday 18. Derek was a humble, gentle man who expressed his deep faith and used his many talents quietly and without drawing attention to himself which made him a huge blessing to family, friends, the church and the community. He served as an elder, sang in different choirs and kept the books for a variety of groups. We ask God to comfort Sheila and the wider family.
3. Gift Day 29 June
Tiyeni, an NGO working in Malawi, is training local farmers in deep bed farming. This is a low tech, inexpensive technique which has been proved to double crop yields. Over time, as fields are worked, a layer of compacted soil forms underneath the turned over soil. This layer is bad in three ways. 1) Water doesn’t get through it so heavy rain runs off the field instead of going deep. 2) Roots don’t go through it so plants die when the soil dries out. 3) Air doesn’t get through it which reduces soil health.
Deep bed farming breaks this hard layer. It takes time and effort, but once it’s done. It’s done. And the effect is dramatic. Crop yields double, and that changes lives. That’s why from this year’s Gift Day we intend to give £5,000 so that Tiyeni can train more farmers.
